A local radio personality just dicovered how texting works and uses it at his station.  Now we get to hear all of his opinions (some not so smart) and his listeners opinions (thankfully in short doses of 140 characters or less).

The other day he was discussing the pronunciaton of "texted", or "tex't" to describe what somebody has done when they have sent a text message.  It was interesting because it once again pointed out how new words have to be created, or creatively re-used in order to describe what we do with modern technology.

I have heard it pronounced several ways:

  • "Text"
  • "Texted"
  • "Tex't" (slight pause and emphasis on last 't'
  • "Texteded" - just silly

I looked into it some more and lo and behold, the historial usage of the word reveals that it was already planned for in the 1500s!

From the Google Answers Page:

According to the online version of the Oxford English Dictionary
(available through some libraries), there has been a verb "text" since
the 1500s, with a past tense of "texted" or "tex'd." The current
meaning of "to send a text message" was accepted by the OED in its
draft additions of June 2004, and include the example of "texted."

And now you know.
