Microsoft makes great software development tools.  They work well and are well supported by third parties and various websites, books, etc. on how to really get the most out of them.  But they can be expensive.  Microsoft now offers various ways you should know about to get them for free under the "spark" programs.  Here are some programs that you may be able to participate in to get your free copies.

DreamSpark - Offers free versions of important tools to students, including Visual Studio, SQL Server, Windows Server, XNA Game Studio, Robotics studio, and more!

BizSpark - Intended for small start up firms who can obtain the software they need to get started, and includes Visual Studio Team System, pretty much all of the servers (Windows, Exchange, SQL Server, SharePoint, etc.), Dynamics, and Office.  There are requirements for participation, but they are not that invasive.

WebsiteSpark - Offering software and tools like Visual Studio 2008 Professional Edition, Expression Studio 3, Expression Web 3 Windows Web Server 2008 R2, SQL Server 2008 and DotNetPanel, a third-party web site control panel.  It even includes support and training for three years!

There are some small requirements for participation in each program, but if you are interested then follow the links!
